A study of the feeding areas of British and Irish seabirds
has identified “major hotspots” in Scottish coastal waters, prompting calls for
special protection areas to safeguard key sites.
As part of the research, lightweight GPS tags were fitted on
more than 1,300 adult birds from 29 different breeding colonies in the UK and
Ireland to track where they went to catch fish at sea.
The data, based on analysis of kittiwakes, shags, razorbills
and guillemots, was used to create a computer model for each species to predict
important feeding areas at sea for other colonies where no tracking took place.
