During a meeting of the American Institute for Aeronautics
and Astronautics on Wednesday, NASA's chief of human spaceflight, William
Gerstenmaier, said he couldn't put a date on a manned mission to Mars.
"I can't put a date on humans on Mars, and the reason
really is that at the budget levels we described this roughly 2% increase, we
don't have the surface systems available for Mars," he said, according to
Ars Technica . "The entry, descent and landing is a huge challenge for us
for Mars."
The embarrassing admission comes just days after US Vice
President Mike Pence vowed to "usher in a new era" of American
leadership in space. "Our nation will return to the moon and we will put
American boots on the face of Mars," he said during a speech at the
Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
